The
New Canaan YMCA builds Developmental
Assets among our community’s most
precious assets: kids.
THE
YMCA’S WORK: BACKED BY
RESEARCH:
As a
“community within a community," the
New Canaan YMCA is uniquely
positioned to provide young people
with many of the relationships and
experiences they require to grow
into strong, healthy adults.
Minneapolis-based social research
organization Search Institute
has conducted extensive research
among hundreds of young people,
identifying building blocks if
development necessary to all kids.
The more of these “Developmental
Assets” young people experience,
the more they thrive. The Y
provides 29 of the 40 Developmental
Assets to thousands of young people
in our community each and every day.
THE
ALL KIDS ARE OUR KIDS CAMPAIGN is
central to our mission of community
service. Each year, the
campaign helps the Y build
Developmental Assets among our
community’s kids by funding these
charitable initiatives:
- Membership
and program scholarships to
kids, families, and seniors.
Last year, the New Canaan YMCA
awarded more than $270,000.
- Inclusive
and specialized programs for
those with special needs. From
inclusive and specialized
programs to our flagship Special
Cares Camp program, the annual
campaign helps everyone truly
belong at the YMCA.
- Subsidies
for essential mission-based
programs, keeping them
affordable to all. Many
essential mission based
programs—like Y-Swim Lessons,
Recreational Leagues, childcare,
and Teen Nights—do not cover
their operating costs.
- Seed
funding for new programs, so
that the Y may continue to
respond to our community’s
changing needs.
- YMCA
World Service work, such as our
partnership with Facing the
Future in Kibera, Kenya and our
recent support of Americares’
Haitian relief efforts.
- Stewarding
the Y’s future through our
permanent endowment fund.
