Aquianas Maintain Momentum at U.S. Junior Olympics

The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas continued to demonstrate athleticism and grace, as they competed on the national level at the 2015 U.S. Junior Olympics Synchronized Swimming Championships. The event was hosted by the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC from June 26 to July 4, and there were approximately 1,040 swimmers in the competition. The Aquianas had 40 athletes participate; competing at the 12 and Under, 13-15, 16-17, and 18-19 levels. Within each age group, swimmers were entered into solo, duet, and team events.

The Aquianas Synchronized Swim Team medaled in three of the four age groups in which it competed. In the 18-19 field the team earned 3rd, with the solo performance placing 4th. The 16-17 group also did extremely well, with Alex Poteet of New Canaan, CT and Camilla Kline of Darien, CT capturing 1st place in duets. Poteet was also awarded 2nd place for her solo performance. The 13-15 swimmers amazed the Aquianas coaching staff by capturing 3rd place in their team event. A feat which hadn’t been achieved by the team in almost 10 years. “We couldn’t be happier with the performance of these young athletes,” says Jen Muzyk, Synchronized Swimming Director at the New Canaan YMCA. “Competing at the national level is challenging, we had 35 to 45 competitors in each event, but our team continues to persevere. As a coach, it’s an amazing experience watching your team achieve their goals.”

Jen Muzyk has been coaching with the New Canaan YMCA Aquianas for over 10 years, and has received many accolades within the synchronized swimming and aquatics communities. Muzyk is joined this year by Petra Cacic. Cacic took on the role of Assistant Synchronized Swimming Director earlier this year, and has been a tremendous asset to the team.

The New Canaan YMCA offers a variety of synchronized swimming classes for all levels, whether it be from beginner to elite. The program was founded on the belief that synchronized swimming can be an expressive and creative outlet for young athletes within a competitive environment.
