Valles Pool Closed Beginning 8/18 to Begin Phase One

The Valles Pool will be closed beginning August 18 to begin Phase One of the roof project.

Immediately following the Board’s decision to address the Valles Pool roof, we re-engaged our structural engineer, who has previously analyzed the Valles roof, to help define the scope of our upcoming project. His most recent analysis recommended a new Phase One, involving the installation of temporary supports (shoring) into various areas of the building to ensure safety and guard against further deterioration.  The analysis advises that the shoring be installed as soon as practicable, but no later than the earliest risk for snow.  In an abundance of caution, we have decided to close the building now and will begin this shoring work as soon as possible.  As we frequently share, the safety of our members is our top priority.

Our current expectation is that Phase One will be complete in late November, at which time we can evaluate whether the building can be safely opened and operated while we prepare for Phase Two, which will consist of the actual roof repair and reconstruction. Phase Two needs to take place after the threat of winter conditions subsides.  Our plan is that construction will begin in early spring.

We will make all efforts to complete this project as quickly as possible, so that our members can return to enjoying the pool they love so well.  We ask for your flexibility, understanding and grace while we work toward that goal.

We anticipate the full project to last through the summer of 2027, however, as with any construction project, this will be dependent upon many factors, and we will keep you updated as we learn more.

Aquatics Scheduling Details:

• The Forese Pools are currently closed for their annual summer maintenance and cleaning. They will reopen ready to serve our swimmers on Friday, August 28.  If we are able to complete this work and open the Forese Pools earlier, we will.

• Forese Pool schedules and water temperature will be temporarily updated to accommodate our different aquatics groups and activities while the Valles Pool is closed. Our goal is to continue to provide the best experience possible for all of our aquatics users and appreciate your flexibility during this temporary inconvenience while we address the needed Valles Pool roof work.  Fall schedules will be posted online by August 28.

• Fall programs and lessons in the Forese Pools are anticipated to continue as planned. If any program changes are needed, the program director will reach out directly to participants.  Fall program registration is currently open.

• Aquatics teams: The Caimans and Whirlwind teams will both hold their seasons during the Valles Pool roof project and our coaches have been working hard on schedules and accommodations that will ensure a continued meaningful experience for our teams. Team coaches will communicate updates to their participants directly.

• NCHS teams: NCHS practice schedules in the Forese Pool will remain unchanged. The Y can accommodate meets in the Forese Pool if coaches choose to host them here.

• Reciprocity: As a benefit of your YMCA membership, you also have the flexibility to use our neighboring YMCA facilities.
