The New Canaan YMCA’s financial assistance program, which is funded by donations, ensures that families and individuals facing financial hardship have the opportunity to benefit from YMCA membership and programs, supporting physical and mental health.
The Y provides over $200,000 in financial assistance each year and this fall introduced a new application, offering a simpler process, including a fast-track option for some, with the goal of increasing accessibility for those who qualify.
The fast-track option is available to those who qualify for certain state of Connecticut assistance programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Husky A or D, and the SNAP program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
New Canaan residents who qualify for one of these State programs are eligible to receive a New Canaan YMCA membership and swim lessons at no cost. Non-residents who qualify for these programs can also take advantage of the fast-track application process to receive financial assistance toward membership and program fees.
Margaret Riley, Executive Director at the New Canaan YMCA shared, “We have seen firsthand the many benefits that individuals and families undergoing financial struggles have experienced by belonging to the Y or participating in Y programs. Every year, we hear stories of immense gratitude sharing how the social connection, physical activity, and joy of youth programs found at the Y have changed lives.” She added, “We are pleased to be able to expand and create a more accessible financial assistance program, providing greater opportunity for adults, kids, seniors, and families to thrive in a welcoming environment. We are very grateful to our donors who fund this initiative, increasing the accessibility of Y programs and resources, and we are so proud to be a part of this remarkable and supportive community.”
A Y financial assistance recipient shared, “The New Canaan YMCA has been a healthy outlet to maintain my family’s mental and physical health. If assistance wasn’t available, I wouldn’t have access to healthy programs and classes. Movement is a challenge for me, and the trainers, staff, and fellow members are so encouraging. It’s been a haven for us. My children light up every time we come to the Y, it’s one of their happy places. Mine, too!”
The New Canaan YMCA’s financial assistance program makes a meaningful difference in the lives of many, and helps adults maintain both physical and mental health, seniors remain physically active and socially connected, working families have access to childcare, and kids have the opportunity to make friends; build confidence; and develop healthy habits through Y programs.
Another Y financial assistance recipient said, “My husband and I didn’t have the opportunity to take swimming classes when we were kids, and we are not good swimmers. Knowing that my kids will have the opportunity to continue their swimming lessons at the YMCA gives me a lot of relief. They love the Y and they love swimming, and with your support, my kids have had the opportunity to become great swimmers. Thanks for your support.”
In addition to its financial assistance program, the New Canaan YMCA also partners with many community organizations to provide affordable access to membership and programs.
