YMCA Awards Over $400,000 in Financial Assistance Thanks to Community Support

The New Canaan YMCA proudly awarded over $400,000 in financial assistance this past year, thanks to the generous support of donations from the community. These awards demonstrate the Y’s continued commitment to providing every individual, regardless of their financial circumstances, with the opportunity to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of a YMCA membership and programs.

Last year, the Y introduced a new financial assistance application, offering a simpler process, including a fast-track option to increase accessibility for those who participate in certain qualifying Connecticut assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Husky A or D, and the SNAP program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). New Canaan residents who participate in any of these programs are eligible to receive a New Canaan YMCA membership and swim lessons at no cost. Non-residents who participate in these programs can also take advantage of the fast-track application process to receive financial assistance toward membership and program fees.

A recent financial assistance recipient shared, “Thanks to the generosity of donors, my son was able to attend the amazing Camp Y-Ki this summer! Something I could not have afforded on my own, as I am going through a very difficult financial situation. This experience has been truly life-changing for him. At camp, he had the chance to interact with other children in a supportive environment, which helped him develop important social skills, build confidence, and feel included. For a child on the autism spectrum, these opportunities are so valuable and don’t come easily. The financial assistance program did more than cover a cost; it gave my son the chance to grow, learn, and experience joy in a way he otherwise could not. Donors, your support truly changes lives, and I am forever thankful to those who make this possible.”

Financial support from donors of the New Canaan YMCA provides opportunities and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds. Adults can improve both their physical and mental health, seniors can remain physically active and socially connected, working families are provided safe and reliable childcare, and children participate in programs through which they build confidence and character, make lasting friendships, develop healthy habits, and have fun.

“With all my heart, I want to thank the donors for the support they give to families like mine. Thanks to your generosity, my daughters and I have benefited from assistance every year that we have qualified for, and it has made a profound difference in our lives. My younger daughter has been able to attend YMCA summer camps for the last six years. This opportunity has not only allowed her to develop discipline, self-confidence, and healthy habits through exercise and sports (something that we would not have been able to afford otherwise), but it has also allowed me to work with greater tranquility and stability. Personally, the YMCA has allowed me to work more hours while my daughters are in a safe environment, in addition to giving me the opportunity to take care of my physical and emotional health through exercise, which has been vital to managing daily stress. All of this has been possible thanks to you. Your generosity not only supports programs; it transforms lives. And mine and my daughters’ lives are proof of it,” shared another financial assistance recipient.

In addition to the Y’s broader financial assistance program, thanks to a grant from the Kashulon Foundation, the Y was also once again able to provide swim lessons at no cost for students in the Horizons at CT State Norwalk camp this summer, helping them to learn lifelong water skills and safety.

The New Canaan YMCA also partners with many community organizations to provide affordable access to membership and programs.
