New Canaan YMCA Pool Update

A letter from our CEO…(updated 6.18.26)

Dear Friends,

I am writing to share that after an extensive and comprehensive review of many factors including community feedback, the New Canaan YMCA Board of Directors has decided to address the roof work needed to preserve the Valles Pool and maintain a positive experience for our aquatics community for years to come. The Board remains mindful, however, of the age of the pool itself and surrounding infrastructure, and will pursue a time and cost-efficient project designed to ensure safety, utility, and functionality for the aquatics community.

This decision follows careful evaluation, discussion, and community input.  With mission driving every step of the way, we examined facility and program needs, usage patterns, staff input, regular member feedback, community priorities, and the significant investment required to address the aging Valles building. We also heard from many members, residents, and community stakeholders who shared thoughtful perspectives about what the Valles Pool means to them and to the broader New Canaan community.

For those of you who have voiced your interest in the other facility areas that were explored—whether through our annual member surveys over recent years, daily discussions with staff, or the most recent facility planning survey—we’ve heard you, and we will continue to explore how we can strengthen your experience, address needs, and deliver the Y’s mission meaningfully.

We recognize that the process created strong emotions and uncertainty for some, and we appreciate the passion demonstrated by these members of our community.  The central theme of these discussions—and what we should carry forward together—was how meaningful the YMCA community and experience are for our town.  Whether you come to the Y to swim, dive, play sports, stay active, or connect with friends, the New Canaan YMCA is where our community comes together, and that’s something we should all embrace, celebrate, and nurture moving forward.

The pool will need to close temporarily while this work is completed. We understand the inconvenience this will create and as always, will work diligently to minimize disruption. We will share timelines and project updates as soon as they are available.

This project represents a significant investment for our YMCA, and it’s been encouraging to hear how many feel passionate that it’s a worthwhile investment for our community.  For those who have expressed their belief in the importance of preserving the Valles Pool, we invite you to consider supporting this effort through a contribution to the Valles Pool campaign.  Click here to learn more about supporting this project.

Thank you for your engagement, your feedback, and your commitment to the New Canaan YMCA. We look forward to moving ahead together.

Sincerely,

Margaret Riley
